I've always known it as "a bit black over Will's mum's". I liked to imagine Will, a 19th-century country lad and not very educated, pausing in his farm work and saying to his mates: "It's looking a bit black over me mum's" - and them taking the mickey out of him, and spreading the expression far and wide.
